| Home | NATIONAL UPPER CERVICAL FOREWORD The reader should not consider this content as comprehensive of the NUCCA system. The system is constantly being changed and improved as a result of the research findings of the National Upper Cervical Chiropractic Research Association, Inc. (NUCCRA), a companion non-profit corporation. NUCCA NUCCA is a non-profit, fraternal corporation founded in 1966. Its origins lie in the research conducted during the 1940s by the late Dr. John F. Grostic. The Grostic Technique is an outgrowth of the upper cervical studies of the late Dr. B.J. Palmer, Palmer College of Chiropractic, Davenport, Iowa. With the collaboration of Dr. Ralph R. Gregory, of Monroe, Michigan, the Grostic Technique was scientifically refined. Upon the untimely death of Dr. Grostic, Dr. Gregory, armed with further research and experience, established NUCCA as it is known today. NUCCA'S system re-affirms and substantiates the Restoration Principle of Palmers, who discovered and developed chiropractic. This principle is the restoration toward normal of all the misalignment factors of the subluxation. The Restoration Principle expresses the basic concept of the NUCCA system of practice, because a spinal vertebra must first misalign before it can subluxate, i.e., the vertebra must move from its normal position beyond its normal range of motion. A subluxated vertebra is one that is positioned incorrectly, causing nerve impairment and subsequent tissue malfunction and disease processes. In the cervical spine, several vertebrae, especially the Atlas (C-1), usually become misaligned. This misalignment can tractionize nerves, the brain stem and the spinal cord, thus making precise restoration imperative. It is this abnormal position of the subluxated vertebra that produce harmful effects on the involved nervous structures, causing a modification of the electro-chemical flow over these nerves, and malfunction of the tissues surrounding them. Below are applications of our scientific principles, some results of empirical investigations, and practice methods. Back to: What is NUCCA?
